  1. Everything went well today. We get in the bus and pass around the pibba song to practice it with Carlos so that if we stand up and sing we would be ready. We get down from the bus and went to C building where our Instructor is at. We met her there but she didn`t recognize all of us there because there were too many people there listening/joining her session. Some of us help around by passing the papers, monitoring, and gathering the materials. For me, I think the presentation is fun and interesting because some of the presenters are active, creative and funny too. Especially Elnor from Kitti Salapwuk. I remember her and almost everyone know her because thats how she is, really friendly and active.Even though you just met her, she will do/say something funny so that you can get to know her. Beside this, we attend Dr. Greg`s presentation and I felt sorry for him (in a nice way) because there were no air conditioner or fan in the room and I think the room is too hot for him. Since he want everyone to get his message, he didn`t even bother sitting or taking a break. For that, I think of him as an example of a good instructor/person because those who really put there hard work on something or students really do make a success not only for themselves but the students as well.Even when the students are gone, there`s still something left to remember from that instructor/person. Same goes to everyone who presents from the first day until today. I think that`s all I have to say about now and thank you all.

  2. Good afternoon!I went to the conference and attended Dr.Ferrel presentation. It was fun and interesting in doing the activities that she prepare. Some of us were used as her modeling of the different strategies in teaching second language learners. The other people was very exciting in learning different tecniques of teaching. I really enjoy her presentation which is clear, precise, and interesting. Students will love to learn if the teachers integrate dance, music, and drama in their teaching. My special thanks to Dr. Ferrel.

  4. Today I learned something new in the morning session presentation by our Professor Dr. Rivera. I don't know if we learned it already in our class but I find it new to me when she was teaching it to the other teachers in the classroom. This is the Dice Game where students are grouped up in groups and they play the dice game referring this to cooperate together to create a song and story in their native language. When the presentation was done I left.

  5. We went down but the morning session already started. We attended Dr. Rivera's presentation on Differentiated Instruction.I remembered she presented this to us already, but it was like a reminder for me. But I still learn new things from the presentation. One new strategy that I learned today is the dice game, where each member of the group will roll a dice and say flip a card. If the card says "fishing", the person will say the word in their own language, then it moves on to sentence, story, and song. It was a great and fun activity. I could see that they were enjoying and I was enjoying listening to different languages. I really believe that we really need to learn our own vernacular language. As I can see today, most of the teacher were having hard time translating some words into their own language. I had a great experience during the first presentation, since we were helping Dr.Rivera out distributing materials and collecting materials. I even participated in one of the games or strategies.
I also joined the after noon session. I attended the presentation on Parent Involvement as Cultural educators by Evelyn JOseph. Her presentation was focusing on culture, and how we teach culture. Especially parents as the educators of our cultures. I was so happy learning other cultures. We have representatives from each delegation or cultures, and the best experience for me is standing in front of different people from different cultures, and do a presentation on the Chuukese culture. It was a great opportunity and of course a practice for my career. I also learned from the afternoon session, that one way to teach culture is to put it in a game or competition. For example, for weaving, have different representatives to compete in weaving. This is just to motivate and promote learning our cultures.

  6. I went there at 9:30AM crew. I went to Dr. Rivera's presentation where communication when doing hand-on activities with my group was awesome. I want to say thanks to my fellow classmates for letting me standing up with two teachers and sang our beautiful PIBBA song. Also, I attended the Numerical System in Micronesia where I learned different counting numbers in Chuukese, Carolinian, Palauans, etc. Today's presentations are nice and rich learning for me.

  7. Today I went on the 12:30 trip to the PIBBA conference. unlike yesterday's short presentation, today was worth staying a bit late for. I attend a presentation given by Josephine on how parents should teach their children the value and importance of culture. after her brief presentation we were put into our "cultural group". This was the part of the presentation that i enjoyed and was able to learn a lot from. hearing the presenters presentation on their cultures help me understand the significance and uniqueness of each culture that we all have. I am most proud of Gracelyn Shirai for her remarkable presentation on Chuukese culture. I give you "two thumbs up" you deserve it girl. after todays conference I was able to walk away happy and proud.

  8. Yesterday I went to the conference at 9:00am. I sign my name where the teachers are supposed to sign in and went to the assembly. I went in the room and picks some snack for me before seating and listening to the keynote speaker. When the assembly end I went to building c where our instructor will do her presentation at. Before I proceed on I would like to say I'm sorry to you Dr. Rivera because I didn't know that you asked me a question when I enter the room. I was busy talking to the other teachers and one beside me told me that you're asking me a question on what is differentiated instruction. When I had a chance someone already answer your question. Please excuse me for not being a good student. But I also proud of you today because after the presentation lot of teachers came to me and gave me lots of good command on your presentation. They said that its really specific and understandable for student to learn especially the language learner student. Since you already present this in our class but I also learned new strategy today. Especially the dice game. When each member of the group will roll the dice and flip the card. when the card say fishing the person will say the word in their own language, and then use in sentence and use in song. That is a funny and good activity. Since you also allow your student to help distributing papers and materials I also learned these activities very well. I realized today that this presentation is very funny for the teachers because they share ideas and thoughts especially the active teacher from Salapwuk (Elnor Iowanis).

  11. I joint the 2:00 o'clock session, which was about culture, basically teaching our students their culture. It was a interesting session and at the same time fun. It was interesting, because we watch video clips on how people from Marshall fix their huts or local houses, and after watching the video, we got into groups, which we were grouped into the culture we were from. We got into groups and discuss about our culture and then present to the other groups. Gracelyn and Herlinda represent our group sharing the significance of our culture and they really rock that day. I was really proud of them, because their presentation was clear and everyone enjoy their presentation. And I was in charge of taking pictures during their presentation for evidence. We really learned new things that day.

  12. Good morning Dr. Rivera, yesterday I attended the sessions in the afternoon. The title of the presentation was "values behind proverbs" and it was presented by Mr. Tony Sarapio. Many people attended this session so I had to stand outside the room and listened to the presentation. I Strongly agree with what he presented because it is true that we are ignoring or no longer value our culture. This is very sad because we are now valuing something that is not ours, like money and etc... I learned that we need to keep/value our culture because it belongs to us and we belong to it. Without it, we there is no Pohnpeian, no fsm, or no micronesian. It is what we have and what shows who we are. The activity for this presentation, shows that we(especially Pohnpeians) are now neglecting the value of our culture because most of the proverbs that that were brought up from each group, almost all the young people in the session don't know the meaning of them. I think that it is best if i start introducing some proverbs in the classroom. Thank you.

  13. Hello everyone who posted before me and will be posting after me...I attended Dr. Ferrer's Presentation on sheltering technique. It was a very meaningful presentation for me as a teacher. Gives the ideas of how a lesson will transit and types of techniques to do in a lesson.

  14. I attended Dr. Ferrer's Presentation yesterday on Sheltering Techniques. She presented some of the ways that teachers can use to teach ESL to students. Those techniques would be helpful in teaching students. What I like the most from the sheltering techniques is the incorporation of music and drama into the lesson. This would make students remember more on what they learned as they would be singing about the lesson and even acting it out. Music and drama could be one way to accommodate the diversity of learners in the classrooms.

  15. I attended Dr. Ferrer's session on sheltering techniques. These techniques are to address especially to the second language learners. Moreover, these techniques are very important and effective to second language learners. These techniques are mostly based on Gardner's theory of multiple intelligence. These techniques are include modeling, bridging, use of a song, question techniques, schema building, contextualization, use a story situation, displacement method, re-presentation (role-playing), and meta-cognition development. I am willing to use all of these sheltering techniques when I become a teacher in the near future.

  16. I attended Dr.Ferrer's session yesterday on sheltering techniques. It was a very resourceful and important presentation based on how second language learner's should understand? It was interesting and one of the things I learned about is modeling. Modeling is always important anywhere and anytime when teaching or in the classroom.

  19. Hi, Dr. Rivera,

I attended both sessions yesterday. The morning session was by Dr.Polamo and Mr. Reflong. They were doing survey,it was about "numerical system in native languages" and their survey reminisce me about counting things in many ways. The afternoon session was about the "Parents as Educators" by Evelyn Joseph. We shared different profiles from different regions or islands. It was interesting. one strategy was to involve parents and children in the traditional activities.

  21. I attended the 2 O' clock session with Dr. Ferrer. The topic was Sheltering Techniques and there were 6 techniques mentioned. These techniques (Model, Bridging the cap, Schema Building, Contextualization, Representation and Meta cognitive Development)are not only tools to help teachers teach students the second language, but will also benefit students become ownership by exploring, cooperating and role-playing. The presentation was useful and meaningful and it also helped me gain some ideas for my topic.

  22. Hello Dr. Rivera I already posted my comments on the 27 but I just noticed that it doesn't appeared. Anyways, I was there and attended your presentation. Its a great opportunity to have you here in Pohnpei, because I'm not the only one that benefit from you presentation but all the teacher in the pacific especially teacher from Pohnpei. I hope that from your presentation teachers can now apply differentiated instruction to accommodate different learners in school.
