Today I went to the PIBBA conference at about 1:30 in the afternoon. I attended a session which started at 2 o'clock, which was done by a man named, Linter Kihleng. The presentation is kind of a short one. There are two things I learned from this presentation. First,Reading is the product of decoding and comprehension. The second one is children need to be taught their first language fluently in order for them to be able to learn another language or their second language.
ReplyDeleteHello. The bus dropped us at the conference at 12:30 P.M. It was lunch time and we wait for the presentation to start at 2:00 P.M. The presentation that I attended was the Animals Time Teller. This is good because we can say that it is a communication between people and animal, since we cannot understand what animals were saying.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone, I was informed by Dr. Rivera today that you can still work in your groups even during the delivery of your research Action plans. You can all work on the same target group using the materials your group has prepared. Only the submission of the work has to be seperate.
ReplyDeleteToday only a few of us went on the bus at 9:30.As we were about to enter the gate, we were all surprise to see so many cars.We get down from the bus, went to the registration table and ask for our name tags. One of the lady there recognize us and help us with our name tags. We took our name tags and went up the stairs to one of the rooms which I think is #201(second floor). We went there sign our names on a piece of paper and listen to the sessions on Ground Harvesting. After its done, we went to the next room and listen to why Pohnpeian Grammer is important. While listening, I realize that everything mention is true. Now a days, we seems to know our own language but we`re not. Its like we`re loosing it and its almost about to extinct. I remember the King of Nett standing in front of everyone and giving thanks and encouraging everyone the importance of language. He also says that language is more like a breadfruit. When you loose its handle, it rottens. Just like us when we loose our own grammer/language, its like we loose our own identity. We also attend one of the sessions on recycling and the funny thing is that me and Cheryl just realize that both our moms were in the session too. While joining the session, one of the ladies gave Carlos a hat made from a soda can. He even get one of the hankerchiefs and we all think that its really creative and neat. After all the sessions are done, we went and sit next to the registration table and wait for the bus and everyone. Then we saw Dr.Rivera our Instructor game and walk to the store close by. We waited for her and some of the people maybe from Guam came by asking about our instructor so we told them that she walk to the store close by but we don`t exactly know where or which store. To conclude this comment of mine, I learn great things today.
ReplyDeleteI went on the 12:30 trip to Nett Elementary School where the PIBBA conference was held. When my colleagues and I reached there, most of the members of the PIBBA were gone for lunch. So we hang around the buildings waiting for the afternoon session which starts at 2:00 PM. We went around looking at the sections to see which presentation I will be listening to.Luckily I went to room 203 where the presentation on Vernacular Language held which presented by Linter Kihleng. His presentation was short but simple and helpful. I learned that children learn best when they mastered their own vernacular language.Children will do best in school especially in reading if they are fluent in their own language. Mr.Kihleng mentioned that the best opportunity to teach the students reading skills is when they are at the early grade level from grade 1 to 3. It is really important for us, especially teachers to apply different reading strategies to aid transitions from "learn to read" and "read to learn". They found out that reading comprehension is a problem to every students at every school. Mr. Kihleng also stated that the best way to help them able to read and comprehend is to teach reading first in the vernacular language. If students are fluent in their own language then they will be able to read and comprehend English readings.
ReplyDeleteThese are the things I have learned from the presentation, and I believe this are important things for us to remember.
I went to the 9:30-12:00am morning sessions & Presentations. I was able to pick up my name tag and proceeded on the classrooms. I was able to attend three sessions at the same time. First I went to the presentation Titled: Pwukoamen Pwel or Ground Harvest. I have learned about the three food seasons known during Ground Harvest. I also went to observe the other presentation that was next door about Pohnpeian Grammar. I learned that we Pohnpeian have to be aware of our grammar and we must know how it enriches learning in the classroom. When the presentation was finished, I went to observe the last presentation that was still in progress and that is in Building A, Room # 104. The title of the presentation is about Recycle Resource Locally. They taught us how to convert non biodegradable and biodegradable used waste into useful products and how we link this activity to the classroom learning situations especially to subject areas as language arts, math, science Pohnpei studies and economics. This Presentation was not boring at all. Everyone had fun creating & even receiving gifts from the presenters. When the presentation was over, we had to leave at 12:00pm because we were very hungry. And we wanted to go back to work on our Literature Review. We couldn't stay until 2:00pm.
ReplyDeleteI went to the conference yesterday at 10:30am and there are many things that I've learned from the presentations. I attended three presentation yesterday. The first presentation that I attended is about traditional food. Based on this presentation I've learned on how it is important to know how to plant local food, where to plant them, time for planting, and when to harvest them.In that presentation they use Yam as an example. The second presentation that I attended is based on the languages of Pohnpei. The presenters are from Saladak school. I learned many pohnpeian suffixes and I also learn that in pohnpeian language we don't have past tense but instead we only have perffective form to indicate that somethings has already happend. The third presentation that I attended is based on recycle. This presentation was really interesting because they showed us on how to use can of soda to make hats and teachers can also apply this in their lesson and teach their students not to throw away cans, plastics, bottles and everything that can recycle
ReplyDeleteMe and my colleagues joint the 2:00 o'clock session with Mr. Linter Kihleng. He was presenting on Early Grades Reading Assessment, which was about the collection of data from the year 2008-2012 and was based on the Pohnpei standardized test. I was also happy to be in that room, because he was also talking about the second language acquisition and it was part of my literature review. The session really help.
ReplyDeleteGood morning Dr. Rivera,
ReplyDeleteYesterday I got the pibba conference site at 2 o'clock and I noticed that the sessions were about to start. First, I went to attend a session that was conducted by Mr. Saped Santos. This presentation is about animals as time teller. I wanted to attend this presentation but it was very crowded so I decide to look for another session. I got into a session that was conducted by Mr. Linter Kihleng where I met some of my colleagues. The presentation was short but there were some interesting things he mentioned. This presentation focused on a reading assessment that the PDOE administered to 3rd graders in Pohnpei starting from year 2008 - 2011. The data that was collected shows that 36 % of student are in the advance and proficiency level in 2008. Then in 2009, it dropped to 34%, and in 2010, it goes back up to 35%, and for 2011, they're still working on the data that was collected and if the data will come out with the same result, then there must be something wrong with the curriculum. (For this matter, I think that maybe communication is what causes the problem. The PDOE specialists and teachers need to work together so that what is in the curriculum and the assessments can be valid. For example, the SBA assessment that they just administered to the 3rd graders, I think that the assessment was not valid because some of the contents of the assessment was not in the curriculum).
When the session was finished, I went to a session that was still in progress. It was conducted by Mr. Hermino Tihpen and it was based on promoting economic and welfare in our traditional ways. They presented 3 levels of words of Pohnpei (common words, loyal words, and honorific words). How can we learn and use these in classrooms? (These could be done or integrated in the subject areas like language arts, math, social studies, science, Pohnpei studies, and even in PE. Lower grades can use the first level (common words) the middle grades (loyal words), and the upper grades (honorific words). They can be given a situatrion to model, role play, etc... using the 3 level words.
We joint the 2:00 o'clock session with Mr. Linter Kihleng. He was presenting on Early Grades Reading Assessment, which was about the collection of data from the year 2008-2012 and was based on the Pohnpei standardized test. It was helpful because there were some things that learned about the second language acquisition that I did not know about, even though it was not about my topic.
ReplyDeleteOn Tuesday, we went to the Pibba conference at 12:30AM. We went there during lunch but we met a lot of teachers. Some of them I do know and some I don't. We waited till the clock reaches 2PM and then we went to Building C. We listen a presentation on Language Arts presented by Linter. It was a good presentation that shows the research they did on reading. The presentation showed that many of the students,in Pohnpei, from E.C.E to third graders are not doing well in reading. This is because the teachers are teaching English and our vernacular language together. I was shocked to learn that the lower grade students are not learning Language Arts very well. The presentation was short and right after it was finished, we went down to Building A and waited for the bus. It was a long wait.
ReplyDeleteI went to the pibba conference session presentations and I went to some of the sessions. From what I observe, these sessions can be a effective source for teaching students how to do it. The session I observe is about the recycling methods. I can use the techniques to teach my students how effective to use unused objects and make it usable again. For example, making flowers out of papers or plastics as shown in the session I observe.
ReplyDeleteFist Language Literacy presented by Mr. Kihleng. From his presentation, it's obvious to see that most of it is about the importance of reading in learning. He begins his presentation with a quote about a conducted research on reading. Students would have to first know how to read before they do encoding skills. Therefore,to be successful, the first language would have to be mastered before using other languages. Using his presentation in how i teach would be throughout elementary school years. That is teaching the local or first language in all grades level at the elementary level from grade 1-8. Mastering the first language would help or make reading comprehension of a second language (English) easier. Learning to read would have to be learned as early as first grade or can be earlier (by parents). This would help students for a successful future in their studies.
ReplyDeleteI went to the PIBBA conference and attended Linter Kihleng's presentation at 2:00 p.m. The presentation was about The Early Reading Assessment.I like his presentation because it deals with reading especially grade one to three with vernacular reading. I asked a copy of his presentation as source for my literature review.
ReplyDeleteI went to the PIBBA conference and met with some of my friends that are teachers. We got there around 12:45 so we had to wait for the two o'clock session. I join the session that were presented by Saped Santos and Bailey Moses "animals as time tellers" in learning about the communication skills by each animals. It was fun to observe how each animals made sound. I also went to another presentation about "Lapw kopwou" Pohnpeian cultural activities that for serving the high titles and ways of greeting people lower, common, and royal.
ReplyDeleteI did attend a session that was presented by Mr. Linter Kihleng of Pohnpei. This session has some link to my topic because it is mainly on language literacy. The presenter mentioned that PDOE have done a survey particularly to all third graders in reading comprehension. This survey showed that the third graders on the islands need sufficient strategies to enhance their reading comprehension. I surely believe that the strategies that we learned from DR. Rivera would extremely be the best for scaffolding the skills needed for struggling readers.
ReplyDeleteI went on the 12:30 trip yesterday and attend Mr.Linter's presentation on vernacular learning outcome. It caught my attention on how for four years students in the lower grade level were still not meeting the curriculum goal. The presentation showed data's of the year 2008-2012 how the percentage of students reading is low. This shows how important and serious we must take into action, of teaching our students their vernacular language in the earlier school years in order for them to be able to read and comprehend their first language and other languages.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Dr. Rivera
ReplyDeleteOn June 26, I got at the PIBBA conference at 9:00am. I went there and attend the assembly first. When the assembly end I went to the building A classrooms and attend a session in rm#201 second floor. The title of the presentation was Pwukoamen Pwel or Ground Harvest. This session was presented from three ECE teachers Rihter Santos, Judy Shed, and Elihter I'm sory I forgot her family name. This presentation is very important because it teaches us how to plant local food, where to plant them, a perfect time for planting them, and when to harvest them. The presenters mainly focus on the foods or things that we fist serve to the high chiefs of our municipalities (Nanmwarkies)or the (soumas en kousapw) and these are the ham, fish, and breadfruit. I got surprise when I learned the other special ways of using these local foods.
As we arrived at the Conference, most of the people were gone for lunch. we waited and hanged around until the session starts at 2:00. I chose "Animal as Time Teller" due to the fact that it is important for us to know our past that related to these as animals as time teller. In this session, I learned that animals are the time teller for our ancestors. they are also the ones that tell what is going to happened in the community. One example they provide was a Lizard. "if a lizard fall on the husband, it brought a message that his wife is pregnant". These are very important not only for us to listen and like but for to to listen and share it to our students.
ReplyDeleteHello, Dr. Rivera
ReplyDeleteI attended the morning session. the session is about science "Climate Change and Traditional Knowledge" so we discussed four words(precipitation, wind, cloud and temperature). I think another good method is to have the field trip as a whole class to be participate in the traditional activities because if there were no activity the native language of ours will change or extinct. It was an interesting session. But the afternoon session was full.
I don't know why I have to put a comment again. I do remember that I put my ideas on this day's presentations. Again, I went to few presentations about Ground Harvest, Pohnpeian Grammar, and Recycling. We need to communicate with our people in Micronesia about empty cans surrounding this nation. One way of instead of disposing them in anywhere, you can use to make hats....
ReplyDeleteOh! I just found out how to really post comments today so on Monday was there to register and was at the opening ceremony too...
ReplyDeleteIt was the 12:30 trip that I went on, and of course; I attend Mr. Linter's presentation on VLO. His presentation was kind of short, yet it was a meaningful and important one that us (in-service and pre-service) teachers should put in consideration. He presented some data on how lower grades perform in reading comprehension. Again, what I've gained and it's a must that teachers should teach lower grades (ECE to 3rd grade) reading in their vernacular language as he also mentioned that some researchers stated out that once children master reading in their vernacular language they can move on and it will be easy for them to master reading in the 2L or 3L. The focus here is both in the lower grades and vernacular language.
